The Water Lilies (or Nymphéas) is actually a series of approximately 250 oil paintings depicting the flower garden of the artist in his home in Giverny. The Jean Walter and Paul Guillaume collection constitutes the 148 work of art done between the year 1860 to 1930. Paul Guillaume collected most of the collection in his lifetime and after his death, his widow married Jean Walter, who continued adding to the collection before the whole collection was purchased by the French state and displayed in Museum Orangerie. Andre Derain was a French painter, an artist and a sculptor who was also the co-founder of Fauvism. He was involved in the development of two totally new styles - the Fauvism, along with Maurice de Vlaminck and Henri Matisse, and Cubism, associating with Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso. Claude Monet has been the one to lead the French Impressionist movement and was critical in bringing its patrons together. His mastery as a colorist and as a painter of light and atmosphere led him to achieve a degree of abstraction and made him a part of the abstract painter generation.Monet had also gained fame for playing an instrumental role in helping architectural design with architect Camille Lefevre to design the building of Orangerie Museum. He had designed the two-meter high eight panels in two oval rooms of the museum with skylights enabling sunlight to brighten up the paintings kept in these rooms. Apart from his famous eight compositions of the Water Lilies, Monet’s other work of art includes The Morning with Willows, Argenteuil, The Clouds and others.
